U.S. Ambassador Visits USK to Enhance Educational Cooperation
Michael F. Kleine, the Charge d’Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in Indonesia, paid a visit to Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK). The meeting between the two parties took place in the Mini Rector’s Room on Tuesday, 27 February 2024.
The courtesy visit aimed at discussing the progress of existing cooperation with USK, as well as touring the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Aceh Tsunami in 2024.
The meeting was warmly welcomed by the Rector of USK, Prof. Ir. Marwan, who provided a brief presentation on USK profile.
“USK has collaborations with several universities from the United States. Some USK students who study in the United States, for example at the University of Rhode Island, have recently completed their studies there. Conversely, from the United States, Oberlin College also sends its alumni for internships at USK,” explained the Rector.
Prof. Marwan conveyed that the collaboration between USK and universities in the United States includes UC Davis, University of Michigan (Center for Global Health Equity), University of Minnesota, and Oregon State University.
Additionally, partnerships extend to University of Rhode Island, Oberlin College, University of Arkansas, Arizona State University, California State University, University of Colorado, Georgia Institute of Technology, and University of Pittsburgh.
“Collaborations with campuses in the United States span various fields, including Internship Programs, Joint Research, Student Exchange, Workshops, and more,” stated Prof. Marwan.
Meanwhile, Michael F. Kleine expressed their admiration for the achievements of USK collaborations, particularly in the field of disaster management, where TDMRC serves as a Center of Excellence for USK.
On the other hand, Prof. Dr. Syamsidik, S.T., M.Sc, the Director of TDMRC USK and Tsunami Mitigation Coordinator, took the opportunity to introduce TDMRC and several disaster mitigation education programs that will be implemented this year.
“By organizing these top-notch programs, we hope to create an educative platform for both the community and future generations. This aims to enhance constant vigilance and resilience against disasters,” stated Prof. Syamsidik.
