Office of International Affairs (OIA) in collaboration with Korean Cultural Center Aceh (KCCA) hold the first art seminar titled “Art in Our Lives”, on 26 October 2021, live via Zoom platform. The seminar is supposed to inspire people about the beauty of environmental art and encourage the public to be more resourceful towards the space surrounding through art that can be manifested, also improve the awareness of the public towards the environmental art.
The seminar was started with welcoming remarks from Dr. Muzailin Affan, Chairman of OIA. He said this is a great chance for all to be able to join, learn, and enhance knowledge about art with experts from Korea. He hoped that seminar participants could take this opportunity to interact with the experts and bound a network.
“On another chance, I hope we could hold the physical Seminar on Art in Korea or Indonesia”, he added.
The seminar presented two experts from the field, Isaac O, art expert from Daegu University, and Esther Lee, Instructor of Esther’s Fine Art and art expert from Jeju National University.
The first speaker, Isaac O said that earlier people enjoy art in galley buildings or museums of art. But now people can enjoy the art out of those places. People can enjoy art everywhere such as on the side road or in a public building. Currently, there are many businessmen who use art as a symbol or promotion, or tool of communication. In the past, many buildings in the city were designed with faded colors or monochrome. The buildings need an element of color art where the art plays its role in filling the art space that made the public more interested when looking at it.
He also conveyed how and the steps that must be taken to be able to appreciate the art of sculpture in the surrounding environment. Sculpture environment is a sculpture found in the environment and commonly found in urban streets, parks, housing complexes, and campuses. The role of the community changes from pedestrians who just pass through a statue to become the people who can enjoy the art and appreciators of the statue.
Meanwhile, Esther Lee stated that art is no longer something that only the upper class or certain people can enjoy, but it is for everyone, especially people nowadays who live in the modern era. She discussed the installation of art (public art) and earth art. She gave the example of the art called murals which are painted for everyone. She explained how murals can revive a village and grow the village’s economic growth as well as how the community utilizes the space or place around it so that it becomes better and more beautiful with art.
Overall, art in the old days is used to be enjoyed only by those who had the privilege. But nowadays, in modern life, people have enough access to enjoy the beauty of art. In fact, there are many things in our lives that can be beautified by the touch of art by putting a bit of effort or giving a little bit of attention towards surroundings. Art in lives can be created from the space that people live in. The most important thing is how people use the space to create art or how to beautify that place with art. By having this kind of thought and contemplation, people can brighten up the environment as well as enjoy the beauty of art in the place we live in.
