Learning Beyond Borders in Thailand
Published by rahmi on
Sawatdhee kha, my name is Bintang Yosaria. I am an International Accounting student and an awardee of the International Credit Transfer Scholarship 2024 in Thailand. For a semester, started from August to December 2024, I had the privilege of participating in the International Credit Transfer program at Mae Fah Luang University, Thailand. This incredible journey provided me with significant academic, cultural, and personal growth, enhancing my understanding of global accounting and business practices.
During my time at Mae Fah Luang University, I studied courses such as Problems in Auditing, Data Analytics for Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Foundations of Accounting, and Accounting Information Systems Analysis and Design. Each course offered valuable insights into accounting principles across different countries and the challenges faced by multinational corporations. These experiences expanded my knowledge and helped me understand the global dynamics of the accounting field.
The learning environment in Thailand was refreshingly different from what I was accustomed to in Indonesia. Teaching and learning activities were more relaxed yet focused, and classes relied heavily on discussions. Student aspirations played a significant role in the classroom, especially during case studies. I noticed how active my classmates were—they confidently expressed their opinions and asked questions without hesitation.
On a personal level, I felt warmly accepted despite looking different because I wear a hijab. My peers were open-minded, respectful, and inclusive. I am grateful that I never experienced any discrimination or bullying, and I’ve remained friends with many of them to this day.
Outside the classroom, I actively participated in extracurricular activities, including joining the International Student Club at Mae Fah Luang University. This allowed me to interact with students from diverse backgrounds, broadening my social and professional networks. One of the most memorable experiences was participating in the International Food and Culture Festival, where students showcased their countries’ food, dance, and traditions. Together with my Indonesian friends, I prepared traditional dishes like Nasi Uduk and Balado Eggs. It was heartwarming to see the enthusiasm of other students as they tried Indonesian cuisine. This festival truly demonstrated how we can celebrate diversity while being united.
Living in Thailand also gave me the chance to immerse myself in its rich and vibrant culture. I visited night markets, tasted delicious street food, and participated in local festivals. A particularly touching experience was celebrating the Loy Krathong Festival, where I floated a krathong on the river as a sign of gratitude to the water god. This tradition deepened my appreciation for nature and local customs. I also explored iconic sites in Chiang Rai, such as the breathtaking Wat Rong Khun (White Temple), which provided me with a deeper understanding of Thai values and philosophy.
Adjusting to the interactive teaching methods in Thailand was initially challenging for me. The emphasis on group discussions and presentations was outside my comfort zone, but it helped me become more open-minded and adaptable to different learning styles. Over time, these challenges turned into opportunities for growth, and I developed essential skills in collaboration and communication.
After this extraordinary semester, I returned to Indonesia feeling more prepared to face professional challenges. My experience at Mae Fah Luang University not only enriched my academic knowledge in accounting but also enhanced my interpersonal and leadership skills. I now recognize how essential it is to have a global perspective, especially in the field of International Accounting, where cultural understanding is invaluable.
This journey has opened my eyes to the wider world. It wasn’t just about studying accounting—it was about learning life lessons and understanding the interconnectedness of humanity. I am determined to apply the insights and skills I gained in Thailand to my studies and career, and I feel ready to navigate the complexities of the global business landscape.
