On 24 June 2024, the Office of International Affairs (OIA) of Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) hosted a visit from a delegation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The delegation was warmly welcomed by Prof. Dr. Ir. Taufiq Saidi, M. Eng., IPU, Vice-Rector for Planning, Collaboration, and Business, and Dr. Muzailin Affan, the Chairman of the Office of International Affairs (OIA).

The purpose of the visit was to coordinate a survey and data collection for JICA’s program focused on Aceh’s recovery from the tsunami disaster. The meeting also aimed to review previous assistance and programs delivered to Aceh. Additionally, the visit is part of the preparations for the 20th anniversary of the Aceh Tsunami, in collaboration with USK.

“JICA will compile a book detailing the progress and achievements of the assistance programs for the people of Aceh,” said Dr. Muzailin Affan.
During this time, the Japanese government, through JICA, has distributed aid to the Aceh government, including schools and universities, to aid in the recovery and rebuilding of Aceh post-earthquake and tsunami. Consequently, the Japanese side will gather documentation in the form of videos and photos for the commemoration of the Aceh Tsunami.

“JICA has played a vital role in Aceh’s post-tsunami recovery journey through various programs and initiatives aimed at rebuilding infrastructure, providing emergency assistance, and offering continuous support to the people of Aceh,” stated Prof. Taufiq.

Ono Nozomu, Senior Representative of JICA Indonesia, noted that through collaboration between JICA and USK, both parties could realize a safer and more resilient future, fostering the creation of disaster and tsunami-resistant communities.

The meeting was also attended by Ir. Rahmad Dawood, S.Kom, M.Sc., IPM., ASEAN Eng., APEC Er., the Head of the Laboratory Unit of USK.
