Through the coordination of the Office of International Affairs (OIA), Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) and the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia organized a public lecture themed Japan-Indonesia Partnership on December 27, 2024, at the VIP Hall of AAC Dayan Dawood, USK.
The event was officially opened by the Rector of USK, Prof. Marwan, who underscored the longstanding relationship between Indonesia and Japan, built on mutual respect and collaboration.
“Universitas Syiah Kuala greatly values this bond, and we are committed to forging stronger networks with Japan. By fostering partnerships in education, research, and cultural exchange, we aim to create meaningful and mutually beneficial collaborations between our nations,” he stated.
Prof. Marwan also expressed gratitude for the support and contributions from Japan.
“At Universitas Syiah Kuala, we believe in the power of education as a bridge connecting diverse communities. Through events like this, we hope to inspire our academic community to explore new perspectives, embrace diversity, and seek innovative solutions for a brighter future,” he concluded.
In his introductory remarks, H.E. Mr. Masaki Yashusi, the Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, highlighted the emotional connection between Aceh and Japan, forged during the aftermath of the devastating tsunami.
“We share a common experience. A decade ago, Japan also faced the challenges of an earthquake and tsunami. I hope that many in Aceh, especially the younger generation, continue to pursue disaster mitigation education,” he emphasized.
During the lecture, Mr. Yashusi delved into Japan’s diplomatic strategies, which are at a crucial juncture. He outlined Japan’s focus on preserving and strengthening a free and open international order based on international law, addressing security challenges, and tackling global issues.
“In this context, Japan and Indonesia have built a strong partnership as Comprehensive Strategic Partners,” he noted. “Their bilateral relations are marked by cooperation on regional and international issues and collaboration across various fields. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to addressing global challenges and strengthening ties between the two nations.”
The ambassador also discussed Japan’s rapidly aging and declining population, which has led to a pressing need for skilled labor, export markets, and international business bases.
“Indonesia, with its large and youthful population, offers a reciprocal opportunity. By equipping its workforce with specific knowledge and skills, this relationship can yield mutual benefits for both Indonesia and Japan,” he explained.
The lecture provided a unique opportunity for USK students and staff to gain valuable insights into Japan’s culture, policies, innovations, and global role. This knowledge is essential for equipping individuals to engage effectively in collaborative activities that address shared challenges and aspirations.
Concluding his address, H.E. Mr. Masaki Yashusi touched upon the topic of halal practices, emphasizing its relevance to Aceh’s cultural and social context, further enriching the discourse on Japan-Aceh relations.
