Embracing Cultural and Academic Enrichment

¡Hola a todos! My name is Defan Arifa, and I am a student from Syiah Kuala University specializing in business and economics with a focus on management. In 2024, I was honored to receive the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) and was accepted to study for a semester at the University of Granada (UGR) in Spain, started from September to December 2024.
Studying abroad at the University of Granada (UGR) through the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) 2024 has been one of the most exciting and enriching experiences of my life. As a student of Business and Economics, with a focus on Management. I had the opportunity to explore new perspectives, cultures, and academic approaches. During my semester in Spain, I took courses such as International Strategic Management, Sustainability in the Mediterranean, History of Art in Spain, and Spanish language. These classes weren’t just about lectures and assignments; they offered hands-on experiences that connected the lessons to the real world. For instance, we explored Granada’s landscapes, toured Carmen Barcelo, a famous hotel company, and even visited the engineering faculty at UGR. The Spanish class stood out with its practical approach to teaching communication skills through everyday expressions, helping us interact more naturally with locals.
Being part of a diverse group of students from countries like Germany, Denmark, China, Japan, and the United States added another layer of learning. This diversity made the exchange program a richer experience as I learned not just about Spanish culture but also about the perspectives of my international classmates. The facilities at UGR were also very supportive, with vending machines, cozy study corners, and relaxing break spaces. One memorable moment was during my Spanish class when I shared stories about Aceh’s unique art and gastronomy in Spanish, introducing my classmates to the beauty of my home culture. This cultural exchange was significant, as it allowed me to promote Aceh while learning about others’ traditions too.
Outside of the classroom, I joined various activities that made my stay in Granada even more special. I went hiking in stunning places like Los Cahorros and Caminito del Rey, and the university organized study tours to cities like Malaga, Cordoba, and Sevilla. These trips not only expanded my knowledge but also allowed me to appreciate Spain’s rich history and breathtaking landscapes. A highlight of my stay was practicing with my bandmates for a performance at the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid. The concert on December 7th, 2024, was a proud moment for me, blending my love for music with representing my country abroad. Granada itself was an incredible city—calm and vibrant at the same time. Its lively nightlife and relaxed atmosphere made it the perfect place to study. Leaving this beautiful city was bittersweet, as it had truly become a home away from home.
