Canadian Ambassador Discusses Indonesia–Canada Bilateral Relations at USK

The Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Jess Dutton, visited Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) to deliver a public lecture on the topic of “Canada–Indonesia Bilateral Relations: An Overview.” The lecture, officially opened by USK’s Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agussabti, M.Si., IPU, ASEAN Eng, took place at the VIP Room of AAC Dayan Dawood Building on 6 November 2025.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Agussabti expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Ambassador Dutton’s visit and insightful lecture. He emphasized that the theme of the lecture held special meaning for USK, as it reflects the growing partnership between Indonesia and Canada, which continues to flourish based on shared values such as democracy, mutual respect, and cooperation across various sectors including education, research, and innovation.
He further expressed optimism that the bilateral ties between both nations will continue to strengthen—not only through diplomacy and politics, but also through academic collaboration.
“USK is committed to contributing to the enhancement of Indonesia–Canada relations through academic activities, student and staff exchanges, joint research, and other forms of educational cooperation,” he said.
Prof. Agussabti added that USK views its role not only as a higher education institution, but also as a bridge connecting nations through education and mutual understanding. He hoped the public lecture would broaden the perspectives of students and academic staff, deepen their knowledge about Canada, and inspire future collaborations.
“We hope this visit marks the beginning of a closer relationship between our university and Canadian institutions, as part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between Canada and Indonesia,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Jess Dutton highlighted the long-standing history of Indonesia–Canada relations, noting that President Soekarno visited Canada in 1956 and delivered a speech before the Canadian Parliament, expressing his hope for a lasting friendship between the two countries.
He reaffirmed the Canadian government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening this partnership.
“The recent official visit of President Prabowo to Canada is a clear signal that our long-standing friendship continues to offer bright prospects for the future,” said Ambassador Dutton.
