USK and GOU Join Forces to Advance Higher Education Internationalization
Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) continues to strengthen its international network through a strategic partnership with Guangdong Ocean University (GOU), China. The collaboration was officially launched with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by USK Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Marwan, and GOU General Secretary, Prof. Dr. Yang Zhou, during a ceremony held at the USK Senate Hall, 21 April 2025.
The MoU marks a significant milestone in USK’s ongoing efforts to enhance global collaboration in academics, research, and cultural exchange. The agreement outlines cooperation in key areas, including student and faculty exchange, joint research, and innovation development in marine science, fisheries, technology, and environmental studies.
Located in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, GOU is recognized as one of China’s leading institutions in marine and fisheries sciences. The university holds a strong international reputation for research and scientific advancement in marine-related fields.
Rector Marwan welcomed the partnership as a tangible step in USK’s internationalization strategy. He emphasized that this collaboration is part of the university’s broader vision to expand its global footprint and increase international competitiveness.
“This partnership opens up new opportunities for our lecturers, researchers, and students to engage in global academic activities while contributing meaningfully to science and society,” Prof. Marwan stated.
Prof. Yang Zhou also expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting that the partnership has the potential to expand beyond marine sciences to include agriculture, veterinary medicine, and other academic disciplines.
“We see great potential in USK, particularly in marine and environmental sciences. We believe this collaboration will enrich the academic experiences of both institutions and foster innovations with global impact,” said Prof. Yang Zhou.
He also extended an invitation to the USK Rector and delegation to attend the upcoming 90th Anniversary Celebration of Guangdong Ocean University.
This partnership aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), underscoring the shared commitment of both institutions to advancing inclusive, high-quality education and global collaboration.
