Unveiling My Exchange Odyssey at Universiti Sains Malaysia
Published by rahmi on
Hello mates! I am Muhammad Faris Ridhatillah and I go by Faris, currently navigating my final semester as an English Education student at Universitas Syiah Kuala. I am thrilled to announce that I have been accepted as an exchange student for the Exchange Programme – Autumn Semester 2023 at the esteemed Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang. Embarking on this educational odyssey from October 8th 2023 to February 25th, 2024, has been a transformative journey filled with enriching experiences and cross-cultural exploration.
Universiti Sains Malaysia, a well-known university in Malaysia, came in at number four on the global SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) list. The atmosphere at the university is also very comfortable for the students. I enjoy spending time in Minden very much. With so many cats, Minden is a sort of student coworking place. For those who adore cats, studying with them nearby is an additional delightful experience.
The university has extensive amenities, including a free gym, sports fields, free wifi, and free bus transportation. I believe that taking the bus is quite beneficial because it saves time getting to class. Even if the bus is available, I occasionally enjoy walking to class. The reason is that the environment is completely friendly to pedestrians, and the lush atmosphere protects you from the sun’s heat.
Academically, my journey has revolved around the School of Languages, Literacies, and Translations (SOLLAT) and Social Sciences. I took School SOLLAT to improve my English skills, and Social Sciences to learn about societal concerns. Regarding teaching styles, Indonesian and Malaysian classes are practically identical. The lecture will deliver the materials, followed by student feedback and discussion. However, all of my classes include tutoring after regular classes, which is new to me. This class sought to improve the materials provided in the normal class while also bonding students and lecturers.
Non-academically, I participated in a variety of events, including the USM Running Competition, the International Cultural Fiesta (ICF), tea time with exchange students, and volunteering as a teacher in Sanggar Bimbingan Permai. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to head the Indonesian team at the ICF. During the festival, Indonesia was awarded the Best Cultural Performance. Furthermore, Tea-time activities are pretty brief class gatherings to present and display the culture of every country. This time, my three friends and I are leading this class, which represents all Indonesians, and we will meet once a week for five weeks.
Finally, I volunteer at Sanggar Bimbingan Permai (SBP), a school for Indonesian children who do not have access to education in Malaysia. I had a wonderful experience while educating those students. I fully immerse myself in teaching them and sharing my expertise and experience so that they would be more motivated to succeed in the future, I believe! Because they all have potential.
As I conclude my exchange journey at Universiti Sains Malaysia, I am filled with gratitude for the transformative experiences and meaningful connections that have shaped this chapter of my life. I carry with me cherished memories, valuable lessons, and a renewed sense of purpose. Though my time here may be ending, the impact of this journey will endure, guiding me as I continue to navigate the world with curiosity, compassion, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
