USK Hosted Indonesia International IoT Olympiad 2023

Universitas Syiah Kuala successfully hosted the Indonesia International Internet of Things (IoT) Olympiad 2023, held on 13 – 17 June 2023 at the AAC Dayan Dawood Building, Banda Aceh.

This international-level competition was signed up by students from 13 countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand, Iran, Philippines, Malaysia, South Africa, Turkey, Indonesia, Mexico, Bangladesh, Timor Leste, United Arab Emirates, and Azerbaijan. The olympiad participants were divided into 75 teams, some took online competition, and the rest 25 participants joined the competition directly at USK.

Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Entrepreneurship of USK, Prof. Dr. Mustanir, M.Sc, in his remarks, said that USK felt proud and grateful for this chance. USK was trusted by the International Youth Scientist Association (IYSA) to be the host of this international event.

“This is an honor for us. Through this prestigious competition, participants as future scientists will present their innovative and creative ideas in the field of IoT,” he said.

According to him, this IoT Olympiad is not just a competition but a form of international collaboration to support young talent in the world. All participants involved in this competition demonstrated the power of connectivity and diversity of ideas that transcend boundaries. Therefore, he considered the Indonesia International IoT Olympiad 2023 is a good opportunity for all participants to establish communication, and exchange ideas or perspectives to enrich their understanding of IoT.

“We hope this event can stimulate a spirit of more innovation. Let’s embrace the limitless potential of the IoT, and push to create a world where technology catalyzes positive change,” he said.

On this occasion, the President of the Indonesian Youth Scientist Association, Deni Irawan expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the university’s willingness to host this international event.

He said this Olympiad was a form of shared commitment globally to supporting IoT. Technology has revolutionized many things in the industrial area, so he hoped that this competition can foster a spirit of innovation in the IoT field for the realization of a better global life.

In addition, as a part of events, a Webinar themed “AI Used in Science” was held on 15 June 2023. This webinar was led by a Lecturer of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Syiah Kuala, Dr. Ir. Kahlil, S.T., M.Eng. He presented the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the world of science.

During this session, he explained how currently AI has developed rapidly in the world of technology. The presence of AI has given a major impact on the industrial world. For example, an automotive and energy storage company from the United States, namely Tesla, has created an electric car that operational devices are AI. He also stated that AI was designed to follow human cognitive abilities. Many world researchers continue to study the use of AI, including in supporting the world of education. For example, China has created a Smart Lamp to help students overcome their problems while studying. Thus, he persuaded the young generation to become familiar with the development of AI, so that they can produce many innovations that can support a better global life.

Finally, the International Olympiad was officially closed on 17 June 2023. This closing was marked with a speech from the President of the Indonesian Youth Scientist Association (IYSA), Deni Irawan. In his remarks, he said he appreciated and was grateful for USK’s support to make this event success.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Office of International Affairs, Dr. Muzailin Affan, M.Sc., said on behalf of the USK, he expressed his gratitude for the trust given to host this international event.

“I express my sincere appreciation to all parties who have made this event success”, he said.

He said “The entire series of IoT Olympiad activities received enthusiastic welcome from both the participants and visitors. The participants showed their ingenuity and creativity. Their commitment to the IoT field is unquestionable. This indirectly has set a high standard for the upcoming IoT Olympiad”.

For this reason, he thought this International IoT Olympiad is a stepping stone towards stronger and more impactful competition in the future.

“We are confident that the bonds formed and the knowledge gained during this event will boost us towards a brighter future, where IoT continues to revolutionize the industry and improve living standards,” he closed.
