The First Virtual Summer Course on Disaster Risk Reduction
Office of International Affairs (OIA), Universitas Syiah Kuala for the first time conduct the first virtual Summer Course. The program took a theme Disaster Risk Reduction and was held from 2 to 6 August 2021. The virtual Summer Course is a collaboration program between Universitas Syiah Kuala and Tohoku University.
The beginning was opened by the chairman of OIA, Dr. Muzalin Affan. He delivered his appreciation to all involved committees and opening remarks to all participants. Besides, he added that this Summer Course program was expected to be a platform of virtual education, which facilitated all participants to build a global network among, also obtain knowledge and experience from experts across countries.
“Around 30 participants from 8 universities have been registered to join this program. They come from 5 different countries, Indonesia, Palestine, Gambia, Senegal, and Nigeria. I hope the virtual Summer Course might be a practical and effective program for all of us”, closed Dr. Muzailin Affan.
7 experts from 2 universities, Universitas Syiah Kuala and Tohoku University, became the executive speakers to deliver topics related to Disaster Risk Reduction. The virtual Summer Course was designed similar to the lecturing method which its activities included interactive lecturing, virtual visit, daily assessment, and team assignment. Particularly for the virtual visit, participants had a chance to explore virtually some popular places related to the disaster, both in Indonesia and Japan.
The virtual Summer Course 2021 presented the expert combination as the lecturer. From Universitas Syiah Kuala it invited Nazli Ismail, Ph.D, Geohazards Expert of TDMRC, Dr. Syamsidik, S.T., M.Sc., Head of Tsunami Computation & Visualization Laboratory of TDMRC, and Alfi Rahman, M.Si., Ph. D., Senior Researcher of TDMRC. Meanwhile from Tohoku University, it invited Anawat Suppasri, Associate Professor, Global Center for Disaster Statistic, IRIDeS, Sebastien Penmellen Boret, Associate Professor, Graduate School of Environment Studies, IRIDes, Erick Mas, Associate Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, IRIDes, and Elizabeth Maly, Associate Professor, IRIDes.
