“This is my first time conducting this kind of event virtually. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, conducting this event had made me a little nervous but excited. However, as I experienced it myself and looked at the enthusiasm of the participants to join and learn in Korean Camp, it really gave a bright smile on my face”, stated by Esther Lee, the Chief of Korean Cultural Center Aceh (KCCA), regarding the Korean Camp Program.

Office of International Affairs (OIA), Universitas Syiah Kuala, in collaboration with KCCA successfully held the Korean Camp Program virtually for one week, 5 – 9 October 2020. The program gave a chance for participants to learn the Korea language and its cultures, also at the same time they can interact directly with natives, where all activities are online-based.

During the program, participants attended several offered classes, they were Hangul Introduction, Cross Culture Understanding (Cooking Traditional Food of Korea: Kimchi, Kimbab, & Japchae, and Traditional Dance Introduction), Korea Classes (Seasons in Korea & Badchim Letters, Seasonal Foods & Extended Consonant & Vocal of Hangeul, Learning Expression from K-Drama, and Listening to Korean Songs).

Besides, each of the classes was led by natives, they were Esther Lee and his husband, Park Woochul, also another group of natives called One Voice, who had a chance to perform a live Korea traditional musical performance.

A participant of Korean Camp delivered her positive feedback toward this program, she stated “It was a very amazing and exciting program to learn Korean language and its cultures. It did develop my knowledge and insight personally. Also, the Korean Camp team was very friendly in serving and guiding. Hopefully, this was a good step for the next better steps. Good luck always for Korean Camp, and thank you very much for this opportunity”.

As future planning, this program will be regular and held again in the next semester break, thus there is still a great opportunity for university students and the public who are interested and curious about Korea to join this program.

“For sure, there are many memorable moments during this virtual camp. One of them is the opportunity that we had, we all did learn Korean and dance together although we were in different places. It was really fun and we could really feel and see it through the reaction of the participants”, Esther Lee added.
